Facilities in and around Shaftesbury Town

There are many interesting pubs, restaurants and places to eat in Shaftesbury. There is ample parking with wide bays for disabled visitors throughout the town. There is a wide range of small independently operated shops including a variety of gift and handicraft retailers.

Shaftesburys's most famous view is to be found tucked away below the High Street: Gold Hill, recognised by millions as the 'Hovis Hill, and to many, the quintessential English cottage view. The origin of the name is unclear; one theory is that it springs from 'Gild Hall'; today's town hall stands at the crest of the hill, on the High Street.

To one side of Gold Hill, facing the famous cottages, is the original medieval Abbey precinct wall, behind which what was once one of England's largest women's communities lived and prayed. Established by King Alfred for his daughter Ethelburga, for seven centuries until the Dissolution under Henry VIII the Abbey brought prosperity to the town and surrounding country.

Today you can wander through the ancient remains of the Abbey Church, see the history come to life in the Abbey Museum and sample the unique aromas of the Anglo Saxon Herb Collection. At the top of Gold Hill tucked away in one of the historic cottages, you will find Shaftesbury Town Museum, which portrays the town's unique history over the centuries. Original Dorset bonnets and buttons, once a staple cottage industry in Shaftesbury, and the 'Byzant', a gold festival totem which played a central role in the town's water gathering ceremony are among the unusual artefacts displayed.

The atmosphere of famous novelist Thomas Hardy's Wessex ia all around, its streets and houses immortalised in his works. In Shaftesbury, Hardy's 'Shaston', the Ox House in Bimport, behind the Abbey was a precise location as the schoolmaster's house in 'Jude the Obscure'. Other town buildings such as the Grosvenor Hotel and the Town Hall give an indication of the prosperous 18th - 19th century years of a town that was once among the biggest in the area.
