Within one hour, you can be fossil hunting or cliff walking on the Dorset World Heritage Coast, dipping a toe in the sea at Bournemouth, enjoying the Georgian Heritage of Bath or discovering the other-wolrdly grandeur of Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral. A wide selection of houses, gardens and family attractions lie en route, Stourhead, Longleat and Glastonbury among the best known.

Shaftesbury is blessed with large open spaces offering plenty of hilltop running around for younger visitors. Park Walk and Castle Hill each offer plenty of open space away from traffic. Several miles away and easily visible from Park Walk is Compton Abbas Airfield, a favourite with families, which offers a café, an Aviation Museum and plenty of flying action. Small planes, including vintage aircraft, are a frequent sight in the skies around Shaftesbury.

Shaftesbury offers access to some of the finest walking and cycling routes in the south. Located on the edges of both the Cranborne Chase and the Blackmore Vale, unbeatable countryside is just a step away, whether on long distance hikes such as the Wessex Ridgeway, or shorter circular day walks. Historic hillfort landscapes at Hod and Hambledon Hills offer brethtaking historiacal and environmental insights and the rare chalk downlands at Win Green, Fontmell and Melbury Downs are unique for their flora and fauna, as well as outstanding views.
